AIFLAM is partnering with the Bond University Faculty of Law to provide advanced specialised family law arbitration training.
Learning Outcomes
The course will provide family law arbitrators with advanced learning outcomes, including the ability to:
Successful completion of the course, including assessment, will entitle participants to be recognised as AIFLAM Accredited Specialist Arbitrators and to claim a credit for post-graduate legal study at Bond University, and at other tertiary institutions.
Delivery
The Advanced Course topics will be presented through six 2-hour online sessions delivered weekly, commencing Thursday 27th October 2022, and concluding on 1st December 2022. In addition, participants will be required to attend a two-day workshop delivered in person at Bond University Gold Coast on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st January 2023.
Pre-requisites
The pre-requisites for attending the course are that you are a legal practitioner, and:
a) You must have completed the AIFLAM Arbitration Training Course (or an equivalent course approved by AIFLAM);
b) You have practiced as a legal practitioner or a Judge of the Family Court of Australia, the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, the Family Court of Western Australia and/or the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia Divisions 1 and 2 for at least the previous 10 years with at least 50% of your work in that time being in relation to family law matters; and
c) You are currently on the list of Reg 67B Family Law Arbitrators

He practises in Family Law and Domestic Relationships matters in the Family Law Courts and in the Supreme Courts of the States and Territories. He frequently presents papers at seminars and conferences and has written on issues relating to Family Law in professional journals.
He was the chairman of the Family Law Section of the Law Institute of Victoria from 1983 to 1985. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Australia Journal of Family Law. He was a member of the executive of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia between 2000 and 2012. He was chairman of the Section in 2005. He is a former Board member of AIFLAM – Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators and is currently involved in the continuing education of Arbitrators around Australia on behalf of AIFLAM.
Martin was awarded an AM in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Andrew graduated from the University of Western Australia with a B. Juris and LLB and was subsequently admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the High Court of Australia. Andrew has been practising Family Law for over 30 years and is nationally accredited as a Family Law Specialist, mediator and arbitrator.
Andrew has presented numerous papers and lectures at state, national and international conferences and has been a guest lecturer at Murdoch University Law School. He is also a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner registered with the Attorney General’s Department (FDRP), a fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL), former Chair of the Family Law & Family Rights Section of LawAsia and current Chair of Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators (AIFLAM).
Andrew is a Member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
Philip was first called to the Bar in 1996 and took silk in 2012. He has had a diverse practice with his current focus being on Family Law, Tax litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Philip has been recognised as a leading Senior Counsel in Doyle’s Guide in the areas of Family Law and Tax.
Philip is a member of 19 Inns Chambers in Brisbane and French Quarter Chambers on the Gold Coast.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Philip had a 14-year career as a Chartered Accountant with extensive experience both in Australia and overseas. He practiced mainly in the insolvency, corporate and forensic accounting areas working mainly for KPMG or its predecessor firms.
In addition to being a Family Law arbitrator, Philip is a nationally accredited mediator and acts as such in family and commercial disputes. Philip is a member of The Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators (AIFLAM).
Philip is currently the Queensland Barrister representative member of the FLS Executive of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia and is one of the Family Law Section representatives on the AIFLAM Board.
Steven graduated from the University of Adelaide with an Honours Degree in Law in 1972, and in 1979 he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Law from the University of British Columbia. He practiced as a Barrister and Solicitor until 1984 when he joined the independent Bar, and in 1988 he was appointed QC.
In 1999 he was appointed a Judge of the Family Court of Australia, and in 2009 was assigned to the Appeal Division of that Court. From 2019 Steven was the administrative head of the Appeal Division until his retirement as a Judge on 20 November 2021.
Steven was a member of the Executive of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia from 1994 until 1998 when he became Chair of the Section. He qualified as an Arbitrator in 1996 and was a Director of AIFLAM from 1998 until his retirement as a Judge.
He has continued as Chair of the Arbitration Committee of AIFLAM, and he is an NMAS accredited Mediator. He is also the President of the Australian Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. Steven is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Adelaide and Southern Cross University.
Since his retirement as a Judge, Steven has returned to practice as a Barrister, Arbitrator, Mediator and Consultant.
Separately, Steven is a member of the National Sports Tribunal, and a Commissioner with the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Adelaide Football League.
